# Australia and the EU Set to Conclude Trade Agreement on Agriculture

The European Union is re-initiating negotiations to concludea long-sought trade agreement with Australia. Negotiations stalled in 2023 afterfive years of meticulous discussions on agricultural products and rawmaterials.

Don Farrell, Australian Trade Minister, will start talks withhis European counterpart Maros Sefcovic in Brussels to finalise a free-tradeagreement.

Australia will push for access to the European market for its agricultural products such as beef and lamb. The EU is Australia’s third-biggest trading partner whereas Australia is the EU’s 20th largest trading partner.

The EU has increased its efforts to secure trade and security ties with its allies after the Trump administration upended the global trading order. The EU seeks to cut its reliance on China for critical raw materials.

Negotiations are now centered on duty-free quotas for Australian beef that the EU proposes a cap of 30,000 tonnes per year. A free trade agreement between the EU and Australia will provide a wide range of opportunities even away from agricultural goods.

The EU deal with Australia will be the bloc’s third major agreement this year as it seeks to cool pressure from the Trump administration.
