In a sign of improved maritime cooperation, Australia and the Philippines have signed a memorandum of understanding that allows mutual recognition of seafarer certificates. It paves way for smoother trade and shipping logistics between the two countries.

The agreement will strengthen bilateral relations by boosting trade and facilitating logistics between the two nations. Up to 95% of goods trade between Australia and the Philippines is carried via sea. Australian ports received 52 calls from Filipino-flagged vessels in 2024 and 2025 indicating a strengthening partnership.

Signing of the MOU is in support of broader economic ambitions in the 2040 Southeast Asia Economic Strategy through efficient maritime operations. The move underscores Australia’s commitment to the Manila Declaration on Seafarers’Human Rights, Safety, and Well-being.

Philippines is a major provider of skilled maritime labor banking on a robust system for training, assessment, and certification. For the Filipino government, the agreement is a commitment to safeguarding the livelihoods and rights of Filipino seafarers.
