# Australia Tightens Meat Imports from Greece

The detection of foot-and-mouth disease in the island of Lesvos, Greece, has compelled Australia to tighten biosecurity controls.

The Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has issued a notice to importers and intermediaries of species susceptible to foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). They include products obtained from species such as sheep, cows, pigs, deer, and camelids.

Greece notified the World Organization of Animal Health about the outbreak of FMD on March 17, 2026. Australia has removed Greece from the list of countries recognized as FMD-free. Additionally, Greece is now removed from the list of countries approved for natural casings derived from bovine, caprine, ovine, or porcine animals.

The decision will impact live animal trade, food imports, veterinary therapeutics, laboratory materials, veterinary products, and agricultural supply chains dependent on animal-derived ingredients.
