# Australia to Double Blueberry Exports After Vietnam Access

The breakthrough for blueberries in Vietnam proved significant for Australian producers and industry stakeholders. The agreement was signed last year giving access to the Vietnamese market with an estimated value of $4 million and expected to grow to $22 million in five years.

Berries Australia contends that overcoming phytosanitary trade barriers is more challenging when accessing new markets. Demand is not a major constraint since overseas customers are always looking for new products.

Countries such as Vietnam have requirements for detailed government-to-government protocols before fruit can be imported into the country. Technical market access is granted at government-to-government level following comprehensive research data on pest and disease risk assessments.

Australian blueberries can now compete on quality rather than price following the breakthrough. Australia is the source of genetics for blueberries and is the highest-cost producer of berries in the world.
