The US-Iran war has caused the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and cancellation of flights across the Middle East. Australian fresh produce exporters have effectively been restricted from the key Middle East market.

Australia exported 86,127 tonnes of fresh horticultural produce worth A$153.2 million to the Middle East in the year ending June 2025. The most common fresh produce products exported to the region are carrots, onions, citrus, table grapes, and almonds.

According to Michael Coote, CEO of AusVeg, approximately 35% of vegetable export volumes are destined for the Middle East. The current war in the region has caused an immediate and significant disruption to export trade.

The impact of the disruptions will become clearer in the coming days. Significant impact can be expected if the closures and disruptions are prolonged.

Airfreight shipments in the air were forced back to the port of origin after the war erupted. Even products that were at transship airports on their way to the Middle East had to be returned to Australia.
