Australian sheep meat processing has remained silent on the support package between American and Australian lamb producers to navigate higher tariffs or import restrictions.

The industry has remained silent despite Don Farrell, the Trade Minister, meeting with the US lamb sector on the sidelines of the G20 summit. The agenda of the discussion was working together to support and strengthen the respective industries.

The US International Trade Commission is currently investigating whether lamb imports from countries including Australia violated Section 201 global safeguards.

The Australian Meat Industry Council (AMIC) maintains that imported lamb has not caused injury to the US sheep industry. Australian exporters have over the years invested in the US lamb supply chain to develop demand benefitting the US sheep industry. Australia accounts for 70% of lamb imports to the US and the Australian sheep industry has significantly invested in onshore operations in the US.

Farrell is reported to have asked the Trump administration to spare Australian lamb from higher tariffs in exchange for Australian investment in the US lamb sector. The proposal would call for investment of Australia’s superannuation savings in American meat-processing facilities, drawing heated opposition across the board.
