The escalating conflict in the Middle East has disrupted supply chains with the closures of several Gulf ports. High-value Australian red meat exports to the Middle East have been blocked.

The Middle East consumes about 10% of Australia’s lamb exports and 3-4% of beef exports. Airspace closures have grounded shipments of fresh lamb and grain-fed beef to the region. Major customers in the Middle East are Kuwait, Bahrain, the UAE, Oman, Yemen, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

Disruptions lasting days have a significant impact on trade, especially for fresh produce. There are fears that a prolonged war will cause rising fuel and fertilizer costs.

Shipping routes are equally affected, with ports closed and traffic grinding to a halt through the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz is a global chokepoint for the transport of crude oil and fertilizer. Rising oil prices will severely constrain global trade.

Shipping diversions and new surcharges will place additional costs on Australian red meat exporters. Exporters working closely with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry are now closely monitoring the developing situation in the Middle East to consider any potential impacts.

Uncertainty is heightened with beef exporters fearing a spillover of the conflict to the Suez Canal. Attacks on the Red Sea will significantly affect the beef trade into Europe and the UK.
