# Australian Wood Imports Hit $2.8 Billion Despite High Freight Costs

Australian wood-product imports are on an upward trajectory to hit $2.8 billion for the year, marking a 3-4% increase. The growth comes despite a backdrop of contracting trade activity and rising freight costs.

According to Forest and Wood Products Australia (FWPA), annual imports will rise to $2.8 billion in 2025-26, with the monthly averages of $240 million. Growth is driven by plywood, laminated products, and veneered panels that are projected to grow by 9% to hit $750 million.

The other import products posting modest growth sit across joinery and carpentry products, sawn or chipped wood products, and continuously shaped timber products. Heightened activity in the residential construction and housing industry is behind the growth in wood-product imports amid local shortfalls.

The continued growth is expected to soften in the next two years as light steel framing substitutes for the share of imported timber in the structural market.
