IEEPA is a law that lets the president restrict certain economic dealings with other countries during a declared national emergency, but the Court said it does not allow sweeping new tariff programs on most imports from nearly all countries. This decision effectively cancels Trump’s IEEPA “global” and country‑wide tariffs on a wide range of products, but other tariffs he imposed under different trade and national‑security laws remain in place and still apply. In response, Trump called the ruling “deeply disappointing,” praised the three justices who backed his position, and claimed foreign countries “that have been ripping us off for years” are “ecstatic” and “dancing in the streets,” warning “they won’t be dancing for long.” He has now announced that he will move to a new 10% “global” tariff under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, on top of existing duties.
