The Australian dairy sector will record a decline in national raw milk production. Total raw milk production is forecast to reduce to 8.45 million metric tons.

The main cause of the decline is a persistent reduction of the national milking herd projected to drop to 1.2 million head. The structural tightening is attributed to ongoing farm exits and a shift to beef cattle production.

Reducing active dairy operations has effectively diminished cow numbers and placed a ceiling on total raw milk production. Reduced total milk production comes despite excellent pasture conditions and optimized per-cow milk yields.

Dairy processing companies are allocating more milk volumes to high-margin product categories. The Australian commercial cheese manufacturing sector is experiencing robust growth as the commodity milk powder sector shrinks. The move secures the fulfillment of lucrative, long-term supply arrangements for both domestic and international markets.

Cheese production is projected to hit a strong 435,000 metric tons with an aggressive push for exports. Cheese shipments will expand to hit 175,000 metric tons, supported by recovering purchasing demand in core Asian markets.

The Australian dairy sector will become increasingly reliant on value-added dairy product exports to maintain competitive farmgate prices.
