# China Hits Australian Beef with 55% Import Tariff

Australian beef producers and exporters have expressed their disappointment with a 55% tariffon imports that surpass quota levels.

China’s commerce ministry announced the new safeguard measures for 2026 that put the total import quota at 2.7 million tons. The move is meant to protect the domestic cattle industry that is slowly emerging from oversupply.

The Australian Meat Industry Council (AMIC) has termed the measures as extremely disappointing since they seem to reward other countries. These measures fail to reflect the long standing mutually beneficial trade relations between Australia and China.

The new measures took effect on 1 January and will remain in effect for the next three years. The total quota will be reviewed and increased annually.

Australia will be incommunication with China over the safeguard tariff. The government has down played any significant impact on the local beef industry. These new restrictions do not single Australia out in any way.

China accounts for only 17% of Australia’s total beef exports. The Australian beef industry is now highly diversified, having learnt from previous Chinese trade restrictions.
