Carriers are increasingly returning to the Red Sea and Suez Canal as congestion worsens across global ports. Climate disruptions such as El Nino and storms have affected port operations and available capacity.

Climate disruptions such as El Nino and storms have affected port operations and available capacity. Carriers are now opting to take the shorter route between Asia and Europe.

Port congestion in Asia is recorded at 4.3 million TEU which is higher than the COVID pandemic peak of 4.0 million TEU.

Carriers are making the decision to transit through the Bab el Mandeb strait and Suez Canal despite the risk of ongoing hostilities in the Middle East. The big lure is the premise of releasing capacity much faster compared to the Cape of Good Hope diversion that absorbs 5-7% of global capacity. The shorter route via the Suez Canal can avail 1.7 million to 2.3 million TEU to the market if a complete return is successful.

Maersk and CMA CGM have made transits both on the north and southbound directions whereas other carriers like Wan Hai and Cosco have made northbound transits.
