The container shipping peak season has begun earlier than usual, supporting stronger demand and higher freight prices. Shipping lines are rolling out peak season surcharges, making container shipping rates surge.

The majority of routes have recorded increases of between 25% and 32% week-on-week at the beginning of June. The sharp rise in freight rates started being seen at the beginning of the month of June.

Carriers have successfully implemented peak season surcharges across the major trade routes. The peak season is truly underway, accompanied by increasingly strong seasonal demand through June. Further freight rate increases are anticipated in the coming weeks, especially on Asia-Europe lanes and Transpacific routes.

An AP Moller-Maersk report released on 4 June reveals that container shipping has entered an early peak season with the momentum to carry through the peak season. Port congestion, front loadings, and liner capacity management are already tightening the available capacity.

Overall, the demand and supply balance favors carriers due to the limited capacity currently available in the market. The idle fleet stands at a mere 0.6% of the global fleet capacity.
