A container ship, *Golden Star 1*, has sunk off Batam Island in Indonesia. The incident occurred on June 5, 2026, 6 km off Batam after the vessel took on water.

The Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) of Singapore immediately issued a warning to passing ships on the possible presence of adrift containers. The Strait is one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors.

The nine crew members aboard the vessel were rescued by Indonesian authorities. However, there are no details about the number of containers aboard and the type of cargo.

Vessel traffic in the Malacca and Singapore Straits remained unaffected. Vessels are advised to exercise caution and notify authorities if any floating containers are sighted.

The Tanzania-registered container ship is 177m long and 28m wide. The vessel was sailing towards Malaysia after departing Singapore.
