# Explosion Causes Fire aboard the MSC Giada III in Neva Bay

An explosion caused fire aboard the MSC Giada III, and MSC-operated container ship as it approached St Petersburg, Russia. The fire disabled the vessel occasioning an emergency response and vessel being towed to port.

At the time of incident on 4th February, the 2,732 TEU vessel was in the Neva Bay enroute from Antwerp, Belgium to St Petersburg.

The vessel tracking data indicates that the explosion happened in the engine room and caused fire that quickly spread to the deck superstructure and accommodation areas.

Emergency teams fought the fire for several hours before gaining full control. Other emergency assets deployed were the Spasatel Karev, a rescue vessel and the Semyon Dezhnev, an icebreaker.

All 22 crew members on board were confirmed safe without injuries. The vessel was under a Russian master and crew members from Myanmar.

The ship’s hull wasn’t damaged and no fuel leakages were reported. The vessel was towed to St. Petersburg where inspection and technical assessment will be conducted.
