# Imports of Raw Peanuts Trigger Biosecurity Alarm

Peanut growers in Queensland have called for urgent biosecurity investigations over imported peanuts sold in Australia. Independent testing discovered that imported peanuts were capable of germination. It raises concern about whether the roasted peanuts were actually imported raw.

It’s illegal to import raw peanuts into Australia without the necessary permits and processing at an Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service-approved facility. Roasted and other processed peanuts are not subject to the same biosecurity controls.

Peanut farmers fear that the importation of raw peanuts can devastate peanut production in Australia. Diseases such as Peanut Smut are impossible to eradicate and can slash yields by 40-70 percent. The raw peanuts are being sold Australia-wide, risking a biosecurity breach.

The government must act quickly to recall and destroy the imported raw peanuts. Any reports of potential non-compliance must be investigated to ensure strict adherence to biosecurity controls.
