# Pomelo Growers Worry that Vietnam Imports May Flood the Market and Bring Diseases

The tropical fruit industry in the Northern Territory has expressed concern over pomelo imports from Vietnam. The Australian government has permitted pomelo imports from Vietnam pending biosecurity regulations.

The industry says that imports will affect the price of local produce and increase the risk of crop diseases. NT tropical fruit farmers fear the re-introduction of citrus canker that is predominant throughout Vietnam.

Citrus canker is abacterial disease that was eradicated in 2021. The disease has destroyed thousands of plants in the Northern Territory over a three-year outbreak.

Australian pomelo production was 1,000 tonnes in 2023, while Vietnam had a production of 1 million tonnes in 2022. Citrus Australia calls for strong prevention measures since Vietnamese pomelos pose an unacceptable biosecurity risk.

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has reiterated that it will never compromise biosecurity measures. Vietnamese pomelos will only arrive after all import conditions are met.
