JUST weeks into the new year, container movements at Sydney’s Port Botany have been disrupted following congestion issues linked to equipment outages and increased vessel arrivals.

Terminal operators confirmed delays to vessel berthing schedules after a combination of high import volumes and unexpected crane maintenance reduced operational capacity during peak periods.

The disruption has affected both importers and exporters, with several shipping lines reporting extended turnaround times and rolled cargo.

### **Equipment Outages Add Pressure**

According to industry sources, the congestion was triggered after multiple ship-to-shore cranes were taken offline for urgent repairs, limiting the terminal’s ability to process containers at normal rates.

With several large vessels arriving simultaneously, yard density quickly increased, leading to restricted truck slots and slower container retrieval times.

Transport operators reported queues extending beyond terminal gates, with some drivers experiencing delays of several hours.

### **Terminal Operator Response**

A terminal spokesperson acknowledged the disruption, stating that contingency measures were being implemented to restore normal operations.

> “We are actively working to minimise the impact of these delays and have prioritised essential cargo where possible,” the spokesperson said.
> “Additional labour and extended operating hours are being deployed to clear backlogs.”

Shipping lines have also adjusted sailing schedules where possible, although some downstream delays are expected to continue over the coming days.

### **Industry Impact**

Freight forwarders warn that continued congestion could place added strain on supply chains, particularly for time-sensitive cargo.

The situation comes amid broader challenges facing Australian ports, including workforce shortages, ageing infrastructure, and sustained high demand following recent trade rebounds.

Stakeholders are urging coordinated planning between terminals, shipping lines, and transport providers to prevent further disruption during the busy summer shipping period.
