Key Western Australian ports in the Pilbara region including port of Port Hedland and terminals at Cape Preston West, Ashburton, VranusIsland and Dapier were temporarily closed as Tropical Cyclone Mitchell approached.

In anticipation of severe weather, Pilbara Ports Authority suspended operations and cleared all berths to protect personnel and infrastructure. Cyclone Mitchell is forecast to become a category 3 cyclone characterized by heavy rainfall and strong wind gusts.

Port Hedland has since resumed operations as the cyclone moved away from the region after heavy rainfall. Port Hedland is a critical node for mineral exports such as iron ore. No major damage has been reported to port and rail infrastructure.
