# Safe Passage Through the Strait of Hormuz Can’t Be Guaranteed

A growing number of vessels are attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz despite the lack of credible security guarantees. The resumption of normal traffic via the strait is unknown. Tensions continue to run high, and the ever-increasing rhetoric between the US and Iran.

Arsenio Dominguez, the IMO secretary-general, places seafarer welfare and safety as the top priority due to the fact that seafarers have been killed, injured, or detained.

The risk associated with vessels attempting a Strait of Hormuz transit is known, significant, and beyond mitigation. The prevailing situation is highly volatile, and safe passage cannot be guaranteed.

Escalation of tensions just occurred after Iran downed a US Apache helicopter, and the US launched retaliatory attacks on Iranian military targets. The attacks have further delayed the opening of the Strait of Hormuz to vessel traffic. The conflict in the Middle East has already crossed the 100-day mark.

The highest priority must be attached to the safety and lives of seafarers rather than commercial interests, according to the IMO.
