China is wrapping up its roughest weather stretch in years, with four major typhoons in five weeks and the worst may still be ahead. Typhoon Maysak hit Guangxi in early July, dumping 280mm of rain in 12 hours and killing at least 39.

Weeks later, Typhoon Bavi swept into Zhejiang, forcing nearly 2 million evacuations and shutting down Shanghai-area ports for days a backlog the region is still clearing. By late July, Typhoon Noul became the year's strongest storm to hit the mainland, relocating over 715,000 people across Guangdong and Hong Kong.

Now Super Typhoon Dolphin, the strongest of the season, is closing in on the coast between Shanghai and Fujian, with landfall expected August 9-10. Major ports Zhoushan, Ningbo and Changjiangkou have already suspended operations, all 162 ferry routes in Zhejiang are halted, and vessels are barred from the Yangtze River delta. Eastern Zhejiang is bracing for over 600mm of rain.

China's six primary gateways Shanghai, Ningbo, Qingdao, Xiamen, Shenzhen and Guangzhou are already running "heavily disrupted" from the earlier storms, with waiting times of 3-4 days at some terminals even before Dolphin lands. Expect further delays, congestion and tighter vessel availability once it passes, rippling into other Asian ports through the rest of August.

Four major typhoons in five weeks is an extreme run even by China's standards. Customers with time-sensitive shipments through the affected ports should expect delays to continue well beyond the storm itself we'd recommend building in extra buffer time over the coming weeks, and we'll keep you updated as conditions develop.
