A container feeder ship, *the Safeen Prestige,* becomes the first casualty of the Israel-Iran conflict after it was struck in the Strait of Hormuz. The vessel was hit above the waterline, causing a fire in the engine room. No injuries were reported from the incident.

Many container ships are trapped in the Gulf region following the start of the recent conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran. Approximately 150 vessels representing a total of 470,000 TEU are trapped west of the Strait of Hormuz, anchored in safe areas. The worst hit carriers are MSC and CMA CGM, with a combined 29 vessels trapped in the Gulf.

About 14,000 TEU of containers daily would be heading to the Middle East from around the world. The effect of the US-Iran war will be seen in prolonged transit times, port congestion, yard density, and worsening schedule reliability.

Shipments and cargo are not automatically clear of disruptions even where the Persian Gulf and the Suez Canal are involved. Carriers are looking for safer ports further from the raining missiles in the Middle East. Carriers are discharging cargo as far as Colombo, Sri Lanka. Congestion, backlogs, and delays will be felt in ports away from the conflict zone as vessels arrive unplanned.
