Anti-Dumping Measures to Safeguard Local Manufacturing

The building products manufacturing sector is buffeted by unchecked imports of construction materials. Dumping threatens to wipe out Australia’s local manufacturing and businesses.

Dumped construction materials include imported glass windows and steel that are sold below market value. These materials enjoy subsidies in their countries of origin and end up distorting fair competition, according to the Building Products Industry Council (BPIC).

The Master Builders Association fears that the proposed anti-dumping duties will push up housing costs. However, the BPIC supports the measures that will restore fair trade and protect local businesses.

The Anti-Dumping Commission is investigating the import of cheap glass windows and doors after receiving 400 submissions from trade unions, manufacturers, and other industry organizations. Concerns are rooted in the impact on Australian jobs, investment, and supply chain stability.

Unchecked dumping will amplify price volatility, which undercuts Australian producers, reduces domestic production diversity, and cedes control of the product supply chainand pricing to overseas interests.

BPIC reiterates that a fair and competitive manufacturing sector is critical to supporting the Federal government’s goal of delivering 1.2 million new homes in the next five years.
