Australian Meat Exporters Criticize the EU Trade Deal

Meat exporters contend that they were disappointed by the recently signed Australia-EU trade deal. The trade deal now allows 98% of Australian exports to enter the EU duty-free.

Australian meat exporters say that the increased access secured in the deal falls short of expectations. The access promised during the long negotiation process hasn’t materialized.

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) insists that at least 50,000 tonnes, as opposed to the 30,600 tonnes, of beef are needed to be in line with EU competitors. The point is reinforced by the 25,000 tonnes cap for sheep and goat meat, which pales in comparison to 163,769 tonnes of access granted to New Zealand.

Europe is the highest value market for beef in the world. Cattle Australia has accused Don Farrell, the trade minister, of rolling over during the negotiations, considering Australia has a huge trade deficit with Europe.

The deal has been described as a missed opportunity for Australian red meat producers, processors, and exporters. The sector will be severely handicapped when diversifying into a market of 27 countries with strong demand for imported red meat.
