Australian Wine Exports Affected by Global Trends
In 2025, Australian wine exports dropped by 8% in value to 2.3 billion and 6% in volume to 613 million liters. Wine Australia reports that the reduction in exports was attributed to a decline in export values to China and the United States. Exports volumes to the United Kingdom had also declined.
The weak export performance for Australian wines is consistent with the long-term trend of declining wine consumption in major markets around the world. Consumers are now reducing overall alcohol consumption in choices split between wellness trends and saving money amid rising cost-of-living.
Shipments to main land China have declined 17% year-on-year to $755 million, effectively causing the biggest dent on reduced wine export value.
More than 50% Australian wine export volumes are headed for the US and the UK. Nevertheless, some minor markets recorded value growth for Australian wine such as Canada, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. These market spose a big opportunity for ongoing market diversification efforts.
Across the world, trade barriers and regional conflicts are making it difficult and expensive to get Australian wine into markets.
