A container ship has run aground in the Strait of Hormuz after it reportedly left the officially designated lanes and found its way to shallow waters.

Reports reveal that the vessel took an alternative route that led it into the shallow waters. The container ship was sailing outside the official maritime corridor established by the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Strait of Hormuz.

Ships are exposed to serious operational risks and substantial financial losses when sailing outside official navigation corridors. The official route for both inbound and outbound lanes, according to Iranian authorities, passes south of Hormuz and Larak Islands. Shipping vessels on the official route have guaranteed navigation safety due to the sufficient depth and width of the channel as well as continuous operational monitoring.

An Iranian tugboat was dispatched to the scene, but refloating the vessel will take considerable time and cost. The vessel owners will be responsible for the recovery efforts.
