The Escalating Gulf Conflict to Impact Australian Beef Exports
The ongoing conflict in Iran will impact Australia's beef exports after air freight to the Middle East ground to a halt. Container shipping diversions have significantly increased costs for suppliers and exporters.
The Iran war has created uncertainty and disrupted global supply chains due to the proximity of the countries involved to key sea routes. Tightening tonnage availability, longer voyage durations due to rerouting, changing voyage economics, and arbitrage flows are some issues shippers are facing.
The Australian Livestock Exporters Council (ALEC) is actively working with exporters and government officials to mitigate any potential impact. Exporters are working closely to find the best options for planned shipments.
Total beef and veal exports to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region hit a record 40,522 metric tonnes in 2025, a 10.6% increase from 2024. The MENA region emerged as a premium destination for Australian beef and lamb, according to Meat and Livestock Australia.
